Barnes Bucks

On May first Mrs. Barnes introduced her class to Barnes bucks. Barnes bucks a 5B tradition are a dollor bill with Mrs. Barnes face on it. There are various ways to get Barnes bucks you can post blog comment are add to their padlet. Some people are way ahead because of Homework Passes every homework pass you didn't use is worth 20 Barnes Bucks. Ceci claims "I'm behind but, I'm hoping that I can earn some at the auction." The auction is a three day long period where Barnes student can bring in one item each day and auction it off. Many kids are all ready thinking about ideas. Sara said "I'm going to sell my fidigit spinner." Mrs.Barnes is planning on selling items that have more classroom value like the ruler she used to attack Ava. Barnes Bucks have been interesting and everyone is exited for the auction on May 25th till then Barnes goers will have to wait. So stay cool out there. Happy summer!

Robotics Field Trip

The Robo-Hounds competed in the Robotics Competition on April 28. So Glenridge fifth grade piled into a bus and got to experience the Robotics Convencion in the America’s Center.

Many kid’s loved going downtown to see this event that has been going on for seven years. Clayton or Robo-Hounds team was picked as a wild card and won their game. It was fun for many students to see their hometown win in fact Madeline says “It was great to see Clayton competing and winning.” Once they won Madeline was one of the people who stood up and got to be on the big screen. Many people were glad that Clayton could win for the last time before the event got moved. Next year Glenridge will not be able to visit this event because next year it will be held in Houston. Even though many Barnes kids loved it “It was a nice experience to have.” Say Claudia. But, next year other kid’s will get that experience over 15,000 kids from Kindergarten through High School, from 33 different countries go there every year.

This big competition started in 1989 when Dean Kamen inventor of the Segway Human Transporter wanted to promote S.T.E.M. And it has there were many all girls robotics teams including the Robet's. Who Mrs. Barnes said "The Robet's were my favorite team!" And the Robet's did well in the game. The rules of the competition are simple they have six weeks to build a robot based on a game. This year’s game or challenge was the collect and shoot the balls. If you got a ball into the basket it was one point. And f your robot was able to collect the gears around the court that gave them extra points.

We hope to hear more about this competition next year as fifth grade will become middle schoolers. Happy summer stay cool out there!

100 Word Challenge

What if one thing in the Star Wars saga was changed? There would be no Kylo Ren, the empire took over, and Han Solo was still alive. The difference in the Empire Strikes Back Darth Vader froze Han Solo but, he he got Han and Leia as Han was trying to escape he froze him he left an imprint of him running out and Leih running in to save life. The Empire was happy to celebrate their victory they planted the frozen them on a wall in the Death Star. That’s how they could have ended up in a wall.

March Madness

March madness has been going on for 76 years. And 11 5B kids get into the celebration. At the beginning of

March they filled out their brackets.

At the classroom of Mrs. Barnes. Has different opinions of who will win 40% choose Duke. 10% choose North Carolina., Kansas, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Oregon, and Michigan. There is some competition in the classroom. Sara says “I have been doing this since I was eight.” Having more experience than some people. While Madeline tells his thoughts  “It’s my first time and I did terbile” A lot of kids who are participating have at least a little basketball experience. But, this may not matter because none is playing for money.

March Madness is a bracket for college basketball teams. There are six rounds. The last two rounds are in April. Which are the final four and championship South Carolina,Oregon, North Carolina, and Gonzaga in the final four . The championship between two of the teams in the final four. Is on April 3 at 8:00. Till then Bye.

100 Word Challenge

I was so lazy when my teacher asked for the 100 word challenge. I grabbed my camera and took a picture of my beautiful face. I thought that I could edit it. But, it it was hard. My brown hair looked like it was green. I wish I didn’t tell you because now I’m worried you will ask for that photo. So next time your teacher tells you do the 100 word challenge just say I was going to talk about a photo I edited. But, it didn’t turn out. So that's how I didn’t do my 100 word challenge.

100 Word Challenge #1

Amila hated being last but, it seemed she always was. She was last in reading her book group book. She thought “What do I do.” She thought it could have something to do that she always took notes. She stopped but, her group got mad. But, she finished faster. She then said “I will simply just only write.” But, they got mad because they could never meet because she didn’t read. So she thought and thought “That's why I’m always last.” So she decided to take notes after. Amila was so happy. Now she could read fast and in time.

The Great Fifth Grade Disaster

For the past few weeks Glenridge fifth-grade has been practicing for a Musical. Musicals called the great nursery rhyme disaster. Fifth grade classes have been learning songs for Mrs. Kelton at music class.

The Great nursery rhyme disaster it's about Little Miss Muffet Little messing up all the nursery rhymes. There's singing acting and you can even be part of stage crew. Everyone gets a part but, there's only one main role everyone else is a miner charter. Madeline says “ I wish their would be more lead roles. Imagine you were a big actress who wanted a lead role but, their is only one lead.” What if there's more lead roles wouldn't there be more people getting embarrassed. “Seems childish” Said Ava. Is this play meant for fifth graders. Mrs. Kelton states “ I thought this to a second grade class.” Which was hard to expect for some people but Ashleigh said “It will make it easier especially for people who are nervous about performing.” But some people like Ceci says “I wish I could get a harder role. The songs they were fairly easy.  Some song included Jack and Jill and one of the favorites Hickory-Dickory-Dock. But even though fifth grade always wants to hear a new rhyme it’s not the best thing to have it a play.

Mrs. Kelton the person teaching them this play is a new music teacher. Taking the place of Mrs. Williams. The fifth grade musical has been a tradition since Mrs. Williams was hired and kid’s loved it.  The musical is on May 6, 2017. But, Glenridge elementary fifth graders will be getting their roles back by Spring Break.  Glenridge hopes to see you there as you watch The Great Nursery Rhyme Disaster.

The Day the Lost Closed

The Day the Loft Closed

On January 20th, the teacher of 5B, Your Highness, forbad the entrance of the citizens of 5B to enter their loft. The loft was sealed off by a string to act as a border. Whoever crossed was in BIG trouble.

This action was due to the classroom of 5B starting the Revolutionary War unit. They had just learned about the conflict known as the French and Indian War. Your Highness announced the closing publicly while stating it was the the residents of 5B fault after not taking good care of the space (which was true) and not that they were not allowed to go back there When speaking to Your Highness she used the following words to describe the incident “I was hoping to get an ad. I was hoping to get a reaction. My goal was connect closing the loft and the proclamation of 1763”. Though the reaction of many 5B students was that they didn’t care, other people in the class disagreed.  The proclamation of 1763 was when none of the colonist could go past the west of the Mississippi.  This angered the colonists as well as 5B. Allison, a member of 5B, said “I was mad, I have a right to sit there.” Many people agreed and were frustrated. Ceci said that “We wanted to plan a rebellion against the closed loft.”  But, some people weren’t that mad Cha Cha claims “I don’t really care.”

In the end Your Highness had a change of heart. Her point had been proved and there was no need for the closed loft anymore. So, Your Highness untied the string that served as the border and 5B students were free to go to into the loft. Now, the loft schedule was back on track. But do you think loft deserved to be open?

Non-Fiction Share By Ceci

On the Wednesday before winter break it was Glenridge fifth grade info share. Through November into December kid’s have been researching and writing about the topic they choose. Kid’s choose topics anywhere from King Henry viii to Ticks. For the presentation kid’s were asked to bring in a side kick something to go along with your topic.While they were presenting at there station parents came to see their child and their classmates.   

Ceci says “It was fun telling people about a topic that I worked hard to research” They did work hard to research. Mrs. Barnes sometimes gave the whole class weekend homework. Which wasn’t fair to a lot of people. Sara claims “I guess we have to do it if we want to make a good report.” Which is true kid’s only got 20 minutes of research time each day. So some kid’s researched a lot plus everyone had to write a report in two days. It was hard but, it payed off.

At 1:45 that Wednesday all the fifth graders were ready and set up their little station. Parents then, started to ask them questions and Mrs. Barnes class gave them a overview of the topic. Madeline said “ I liked how we got to teach someone else about something were an expert at.” Pretty much everyone agreed but, some people thought it was a little nerve racking. Plus, everyone was excited for holiday sing and it was almost winter break.

The next topic for fifth grade will be Debatable topics and Glenridge can’t wait to see all the ideas Mrs.Barnes class comes up with. Will this be a big report like info reports or will it not be as big of a deal?

    

November News Story: Kids Vote

The day before US Election Day 2016 against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton  Glenridge students voted for who will become president, senator, and attorney general for the United states of America on tablets in the makerspace. It gave the whole school a chance to feel the responsibility of voting.

Christian a fifth grader said, “We got the chance to vote which is exciting.” Lots of other fifth graders said yes mainly for the same reason as Christian. But, it started to become a problem when people started faking to like Trump or not giving a honest vote.

Ashleigh said, “Kid’s will make a joke and vote for Trump.” However Julianne claimed “Kid’s actually do want to vote for Trump. He’s doing a lot of things right.”  She continued by saying, “How did he win the real election if people want to vote for him?” Which seems true but, Ceci said to Julianne “What if it was all a joke?”

Most kids actually do follow in different footsteps as their parents when it comes to Trump. Lot of studies show that teens stay true to their parents most of the time. In total with all of Missouri kids vote %60 voted for Hillary, %33 voted Trump, and %7 voted for another candidate. But, at Glenridge Donald Trump won so most of us can’t wait for our new president elect Trump.

It's Socktober at Glenridge by Ceci

Glenridge Students are celebrating Socktober. Which is a sock drive and some events to raise money. Through the last week of October they are having these fundraisers they had a socks in class day on Monday and a Wacky Wednesday and a Pajama day on Friday. And they had to pay a dollar to participate.

To participate on these days you must bring a dollar which the money goes into building a homeless shelter.

Wacky Wednesday was a funny experience. Kids and teachers wore tutus, silly wigs, crazy hair, inside out clothes, ties, and some mismatched socks.

However some kids didn’t dress up and pay a dollar to help the homeless. Rhadi says “I don’t care. We can dress up like this everyday.” Well, this also happens when kids decide to not bring a dollar. Ceci says “I bet we could have gotten a 100 more dollar for every event if everyone was honest.” Ceci was on the committee that created the event to help Socktober.   

Socktober is a event Kid President created to help donate socks to the homeless he’s also trying to build a homeless shelter.. All the socks donated are going to a local homeless shelter in Saint Louis.    

Glenridge is getting a lot of socks and money to help this cause and hopefully we are making a difference.

Crash book review By Ceci

Crash by Jerry Spinelli is about Crash who is a 7th grade football player in Pennsylvania but, when Penn. A nerdy, and selfless kid comes he becomes a bully.

My favorite part was when Penn and Crash were in first grade and they meet. They constantly try and top each other. It’s a funny and special moment to this book and it shows how greedy Crash is in first grade.

I recommend Crash for people who like Andrew Clements. If you don’t like comedy, realistic fiction, and being mean to your little sister don’t read this but if you do, you're in luck.

Barnes Arcade by Ceci

Every year the Imagination Foundation hosts a world wide cardboard challenge on October first. The rules are 1. Be creative and  2. Be yourself that's it. This celebration  all started with a kid named Caine he created arcade made out of cardboard. He was sometimes embarrassed by his arcade people teased him then, one day a man came in who told everyone about his arcade. He became famous even Jack Black came to his arcade. In class we watched this video and we were inspired to make our arcade. We called it Barnes Arcade we used the launch cycle to help us with this challenge.

First, We look, listened, and learned. We watched Caine’s Arcade and took notes of his process. We looked at what tools he used, and how he made the simple cardboard games. We listened to Mrs.Barnes explain how this created a impact and we learned if you have dreams follow them.

Second, We asked lots of questions such as “Who will we work with?”, “How do we build that?”, and “What will I need.” This helped us with the next step  to come up with a plan of who were we going to work with, what were we building, and what we needed to build that. We had 7 groups they were making the  Greyhound shooting game, crawfish, da claw, compressor skeeball, skeeball, fireball, and

plinto. This stage was one of the hardest we had to be creative with what we did

Then, we started building. There were many challenges like having to only use light cardboard, only having two days, and working as a group. We had to remember how simple Caine's games were. Many kids used ideas from the video like a basketball game, and claw machines.

Then, We tested it and improved our project. Many project weren’t perfect the first time so they used extra cardboard to create a new part of their games. The Claw Machine had time to make a blindfold, the Basketball game made a ramp, and the pinto game even got to decorate!   

Last, we showed it to our audience (kindergarten buddy's) and go into other classrooms with them. They didn't look or work like real games but they still were awesome .Some groups didn't

have that many prizes. My groups teddy bear was stolen by a kindergartener. Many kids won awesome prizes. Like my kindergarten buddy's hands was full with candy, and little toys. It was so much fun. The kindergarteners gave us little thank you notes and drew us pictures. We hope to be doing another project like this soon.

Is A Bench Just An Embarrassment

At Glenridge Elementary on August 22    they introduced the Buddy Bench to help kids who want someone to play with. In a comment they explained it wasn’t a joke however many kids think it is.

Well many kids sit down and make a joke about it and say things such as “Will you be my buddy?!?” and some kid fake cry. Well Sophia in 5th grade said “Someday it will have a purse.” and Sara said “I would help someone who needed it.” However Claudia even told me “Kids in fifth grade just sit on it or take it as a joke.” Even if you were lonely Stella a painter of the buddy bench said “I’d never sit on there.” Ashliegh 5th grade girl told me “People who need it don’t want to sit down. So none will actually use it.”

Well the teacher Mr. Manly a first grade supervisor said “Well, First grade uses it alot if they need someone they sit right down.” “4th and 5th grade never use it.” Said Mrs. Stoffer.

It’s off limits to everyone 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Teachers think it’s hurtful and rude. It will be like that till prove they are responsible they said it would reopen.

Everyone hopes it will come in great use to us. Everyone at Glenridge elementary is learning a great lesson from this and everyone is trying to help each other with this problem. Till then everyone will keep trying to help the people who sit down and most people are hoping everyone will start making responsible choices. The teachers hope to reopen the buddy bench for all grades.
