Cardboard Challenge By Sara

If you've ever heard of Caine's Arcade you're in for a treat! At Glenridge Elementry School in St.Louis, 5th graders are creating and learning new and old things. At the beginning of the year, 5th graders did the Pringle Challenge wich the objective was to take a pringle, make a safe home for it, and send it in a box to another school in Webster. But the 5th grade teachers decided to take to a whole, new, level.

Introducing, the Cardboard challenge! This challenge is worldwide you can do it anywhere. Have you ever heard the story of Caine? He made his own arcade out of cardboard! The sad part was nobody came. They just walked past Caine and his arcade. Caine was fine with it. He just persiveired and waited. One day, Caine got a customer! The customer paid 2 dollars, wich got him his own fun pass. A fun pass gets you 500 free turns on any of the games! He played, and played... but then he left. When the customer got home he sent out a tweet saying "Caine's Arcade Flashmob". The next day, Caine and his dad went out for pizza, and played a few arcade games. When Caine came back, he found his little cardboard arcade surrounded by thousands of people! He was freaked out! Most people baught fun passes, and stayed for hours. Some people donated extra money. This is where the cardboard challenge comes into place.

Based on Caine's story, the cardboard challenge is a fun, worldwide event that anyone can enter. If you want to donate money to the cardboard challenge or enter, just go to this link. The cardboard challenge is spreading quickly!

Now, let's get to the part where Glenridge comes in. The 5th graders at Glenridge have entered the cardboard challenge and are working on there project right now! "I'm working with Sara and Ceci, and we are making a basketball game called the Greyhound. We are all on the Greyhounds." Says Ava. I also saw a game called "Fireball" and a claw machine with many candies in it. I got very excited and asked if I could play the claw machine. They were very nice and they let me have a turn. I took the claw, pointed it at one of the delicious candies, and ate it up. I was fasinated when I heard about who was going to be their audience on friday.

I was astonished when I heard about their audience. Mrs. Seives kindergarden class and the other 5th grade classes were going to be their audience. No wonder they had

Cardboard Challenge

Today's arcade was fabulous!  Students created wonderful arcade games for the kindergarten buddies and a fun time was had by all.

Family Meets Wizards news story

       Family meets Wizards

September 11th,It was an exciting day, nice and warm it was a nice day to go to Harry Potter World. Me and my family went to the entrance and went to go get wands.

I first picked sirius black's wand and my sister didn’t want one there so as we went to the hogwarts stores and we found more wands and wands that no wizard had picked. My sister got Hermione’s wand and I got the wands that no wizard has picked. So the wand that I picked before my sister’s wand was switch with my wand that I didn’t want so she had Hermione’s wand and I had my own wand.

Next me and my family went to get candy and butter beer, butterbeer is a sweet juice like drink that has a whip cream like foam. So me and my mom and brother went to go get candy while my dad and sister went to go get butterbeer. At the store me and my mom got chocolate frogs every flavor beans and M&Ms so when we finished my sister saw the chocolate frog she whined that she didn’t get one but I told her that she got every flavor beans but she didn’t care. Me and my family tried the butterbeer that my sister and dad got, it tastes really sweet and tart.

After that we did magic with our wands, the way of how it works is there is a sensor that senses the movement of the wand because there is a sensor on the wand so it is very fun because there is a lot of tricks that you can do.

Me and my family went on rides it was very fun I went on two scary rides and one very fun ride it went very fast.My sister said tht it was the best time ever! It was the best day ever!

 1st CLAYMO success
by. Adam

The teacher along with the leaders were checking to see if everyone was in the room and ready for the first CLAYMO of the 2016-2017 year at Glenridge. Once that was done the CLAYMO leaders started to introduce themselves to their new CLAYMO group Varoon started with a basic “ Welcome to your CLAYMO group, I will be one of your CLAYMO leaders this year.” all of the CLAYMO leaders did the same, after that the leaders passed around the microphone to each student in A1’s CLAYMO group and they would say their name, grade, teacher, and favorite subject in school. They started with the teacher ( Mrs. Bikert ) and then Luke so on so forth. So far the CLAYMO was going GREAT. Now was the hard part: actually telling them about their biggest challenge yet… making a newspaper tower with newspaper ( obviously ) and masking tape, they couldn't attach it to anything and it had to be a free standing tower. They would get 5 min to plan and then 10 min to build. The leaders split them up into two groups and the leaders gave them a scratch piece of paper to plan on. “ The timer starts NOW” said the leaders in A1 as they walked around to observe the thinking of the builders. The teams got this done pretty quickly and got to the building. At first group 1 was having some trouble but redesigned and kept building meanwhile group two was excelling they had it at least three feet but group 1 was building theirs just as high and then suddenly PLOP! Group 1’s tower had fallen over! Then PLOP! So had group 2’s. “ 5,4,3,2,1 hands up” both teams towers had fallen over when they measured group 1’s tower was… seven inches tall and group 2’s was …….. Nine inches tall. In Luke’s group Luke was saying good job to his team ( team 1 ). The fifth grade and their CLAYMO groups will continue to succeed in every task that the teachers throw at them for the next month and the whole year.

Threw out the class in 5B 12 people said that their CLAYMO was a success and 5 people said it didn’t go how they wanted it to go.|

WIFI Gets Destroyed

On September 19,2016 one unlucky brother gets blamed for destroying the WIFI. My grandparents were watching the football game and a 11 year old girl was doing her homework. Then all of a sudden the TV went black and a computer lost the WIFI signal. And then  heard someone’s grandparents yelling to the TV NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!! A few minutes later a mother had to call a girl’s dad to come pick her up and do her homework there and spend the night with him. When she got in his car she told him that she destroyed the WIFI so she could see him because he has been crying about the divorce a lot. But she didn't mean to make almost all the appliances in the house go black or lose their single. Her dad laughed a lot when she told him this. And when she finished telling him this she heard her mom yelling at her brother that he can't touch the WIFI.

STOLEN AND BROKEN

On September 18th 2016, in St.Louis in Compton Heights
Allen Avenue something was stolen and broken.

At the Bishop family’s house, someone broke into Mr. Bishop's car. The person who to break in broke the window in the backseat of a car and stole a camera & the lenses.

This could have happened in the middle of the night or in the morning. There were shards of glass near the window everywhere. Police came when crime scene found. They checked for fingerprints but found nothing.  “No fingerprints” said the policewoman.

Possibly when the crime happened when the Bishop family came back from the park from watching a movie. It also could have happened when they left for the park.

But either way the criminal was unfounded.  Since they did not find any fingerprints it probably means that the criminal was wearing gloves.

Volleyball
At Glenridge elementary school, students are playing Volleyball.  They randomise teams and play games that keep score.
Sage says “keeping score is a good idea so we know if we are doing good”.  Claire agrees.  There is one server and they rotate every time someone misses the net and hits it under it.

Liam said “I don't like volleyball”.  However Claire disagrees and likes volleyball.  A lot of kids have different perspectives on volleyball.  Ava says “P.E. IS WAY TOO SHORT”, Ava only likes p.e.

We have done volleyball for a week now and we are doing something else now.  Rhadi says “volleyball should have gone on longer”.

Claymo Fun, For Everyone?
By: Madeline

On September 8th, Glenridge fifth graders helped kick of the first Claymo. With a task to complete, Claymo was a very interesting take on a mind twisting project. Memories were made both good and bad.
The task was to build a freestanding tower made out of only newspaper and tape. Claymo, the monthly get together were fifth graders lead meaningful lessons, was something some fifth graders looked forward to. Some kids such as Ceci and Sara had a great time at Claymo. Ceci recalls “It was very fun. But some kids misbehaved” and Sara recalls “It was good. It was fun. Fun is Claymo”. However, Macy did not enjoy Claymo as much as Ceci and Sara. Macy says “My group built the highest tower. But a kid throw a puppet at my head. Plus we forgot to say the Claymo promise”.
As you can see, Claymo isn’t fun for everyone. In fact, some people don’t even like Claymo. But what kids don’t understand is that they will be just like these 5th grade leaders some day. Maybe they will realize the Golden Rule. Then, maybe those who will follow the Golden Rule will help others enjoy Claymo, like them. So for those kids K-4th, remember you will follow these 5th graders footsteps, so make sure you help 5th graders make their  footsteps leave a mark. So, this year, help out and help Claymo leaders be the example you want to follow.

5th Grade CLAYMO Fun! News Story by Sara

5th grade CLAYMO fun!

On September 8th 2016, the first CLAYMO of the 2016/2017 school year happened at Glenridge Elementary School. What does CLAYMO stand for? CLAYMO stands for Care Lots About Yourself and Many Others. CLAYMO is a creative program where you learn  to take care about yourself and others and do lots of life skills learning. CLAYMO usually takes place from 2:45 to 3:25. Two or three 5th graders lead each CLAYMO group with one or two supervisors. Each CLAYMO group has around 9 -12 people from all different grades. Usually two or three people from each grade are put in one CLAYMO group. I decided to get a closer look at one of the CLAYMO groups. I picked Mrs. Scotino’s CLAYMO group.

I noticed how well the 5th graders taught their CLAYMO groups. Today’s activity was having an olympic mindset while working with students from different grade level to make the highest newspaper tower that your team could build. In this CLAYMO group, there were three different CLAYMO leaders and two supervisors; Mrs. Scotino, a 5th grade teacher, and Mr. Kearney, Glenridge’s Science teacher. I walked in as they were splitting into two different teams: Team A and team B. As the teams started building their newspaper towers, I walked over to team B as I saw them already fooling around with their tape and newspaper. Some of the kids in team B were making fortune tellers with their newspaper as one of the CLAYMO leaders warned them that was all the newspaper they got. Some other kids of team B was playing with the tape as a 4th grader, who was going to be a CLAYMO leader next year, wrapped his face in tape and shouted to the other kids, “I’m the tape man!”, and team B started rolling on the floor laughing. As team B was goofing off, I walked over to team A. Team A was using excellent teamwork and an amazing strategy. As the timer stopped, team A and team B both let go of their structures and gathered on the rug in a circle. They waited patiently as one of the CLAYMO leaders came around with a tape measure measuring both of their towers. Team A smiled as the CLAYMO leader said their structure measured over 30 inches! Team B frowned as their structure was only 9 inches. Even since I was only watching, I learned a fantastic life lesson in this CLAYMO lesson. You need teamwork to make things go right.

As the lesson wrapped up, I asked one of the CLAYMO leaders, Sara if I could ask her a couple of questions before she went back to class. She was very kind and said yes. My first question I asked her was how does she cooperate with her other fellow CLAYMO leaders. “Well it was hard at first because i didn’t think I would end up with who I ended up with and in a totally different CLAYMO leaders in a totally different CLAYMO room.” Sara said. “ I did get through it and we did end up working really well together.” The next question I asked her was did you feel nervous about your first CLAYMO? “I do admit I was VERY nervous at first, but then my emotions changed to frustration about how nobody was listening to me,” said Sara. “If that was the only thing I could change in my CLAYMO group I would change that.”

As I went back to my house, I thought about why CLAYMO was really important to Glenridge. In my opinion, I think CLAYMO is a great program to teach younger students life skills and teamwork. Also, with 5th graders as the CLAYMO leaders, it prepares them for middle school next year. As Sara said, it could be very hard at times. Kids could mess around. 5th grade CLAYMO leaders could get stressed and frustrated. But we all need to know that you’re not alone.

If CLAYMO could spread worldwide, schools could be able to teach younger students life skills much easier. 5th graders would be better prepared for middle school. Life skills would be learned. If anyone is a teacher reading this article, talk to your principal about this. I can make a difference. You can make a difference. We can make a difference.

Buddy Bench New Story by Ceci

Is A Bench Just An Embarrassment
By: Ceci
At Glenridge Elementary on August 22    they introduced the Buddy Bench to help kids who want someone to play with. In a comment they explained it wasn’t a joke however many kids think it is.
Well many kids sit down and make a joke about it and say things such as “Will you be my buddy?!?” and some kid fake cry. Well Sophia in 5th grade said “Someday it will have a purse.” and Sara said “I would help someone who needed it.” However Claudia even told me “Kids in fifth grade just sit on it or take it as a joke.” Even if you were lonely Stella a painter of the buddy bench said “I’d never sit on there.” Ashliegh 5th grade girl told me “People who need it don’t want to sit down. So none will actually use it.”
Well the teacher Mr. Manly a first grade supervisor said “Well, First grade uses it alot if they need someone they sit right down.” “4th and 5th grade never use it.” Said Mrs. Stoffer.
It’s off limits to everyone 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Teachers think it’s hurtful and rude. It will be like that till prove they are responsible they said it would reopen.
Everyone hopes it will come in great use to us. Everyone at Glenridge elementary is learning a great lesson from this and everyone is trying to help each other with this problem. Till then everyone will keep trying to help the people who sit down and most people are hoping everyone will start making responsible choices. The teachers hope to reopen the buddy bench for all grades.
