MAP Testing

  MAP Testing

The fifth grade students of Glenridge Elementary tested in their classrooms for about 2 hours a day for 4 days on chromebooks in April. Most kids though it was hard and boring. “It was very boring. But the good thing was we didn’t get any homework for a week!” says student Cha Cha.
The teachers passed out candy before and during the test. “[It was] hard but in the end we got candy” says student Liam. There were about 10 tests total and they each had around 20 questions on them. When the other grades did the testing, 5the grade had to “camp out” in the other grades classrooms. Student Sage says:”[It] sucks but goes by fast.” A after the test the kids got to read independently for a while.

100 word challenge Evan

100 WC 3

Jack heard a rustle in the bushes behind him. “What was that!?” he heard Martha ask from behind him. “I don’t know and I don’t want to find out!” and he broke into a run. He noticed Martha wasn’t behind him anymore. Stupid labyrinth. They had been stuck in the mysterious labyrinth for days now. He back-tracked only to find her running from a weird lion-snake animal. Not an animal. A monster. “Over here!” he yelled. A dead end. Then, out of a final desperation, he ran right through the wall and out into the real world...

March Blog: Planetarium

The Planetarium

The fifth grade students of Glenridge Elementary School went to the planetarium to see the show. at the science center on March 3rd. They left at about 9:00 am and got there at about 9:30. When they got there, they split into two groups, then went to different exhibits. There was a math station, and an engineering station. They switched stations, the regrouped at the planetarium to watch the show. The show was about the different stars and how they form. “It was amazing with the night’s sky, and the star show.” says Adam, a fifth grade student. They mentioned that there are an infinite amount of galaxies in the universe. Afterwards, the students got the hang out in the lobby, where then they then got picked up by the bus.  They were there about 3 hours total.

One day, my birthday, I had cake and cookies! Then the presents. There were so many! I got many different things such as a VR headset, gloves, and lots of chocolate. Then I opened the last box. It was a big hard brown box. I was worried because for a second I didn’t know what it was. Then I realized, it was a camera! The most beautiful one I ever. I knew how to work it because I had read about it. I fumbled around for the timer button and set it for 15 seconds. CLICK!

100 word challenge

One Hundred Words

One day at recess, Luke ran to go to the  foursquare court, like he usually did. Then, out of nowhere, Mike and his posse went up to Luke and took turns shoving him around. When they finally let him go, he went to the four square count. He turned to his friend Barry and said “And that is why I am always last!”. The next day Luke and friend went to the teacher and told him what was happening. The teacher quickly and effectively made Mike stop.

Glenridge Valentines day party

Valentines Party
By: Evan

On February 14 the 5th grade students of Glenridge Elementary had a Valentine's day party in their gymnasium. There was a staking contest, a crafts table where the kids made small gum-ball machines. The was a snack table too were, they decorated (and ate of course!) cupcakes. The adults played music while the kids went through the stations. If you won at one of the games, you got a sucker. The party started at about 2:45 and everything started out pretty peaceful. “I think it was very fun and exciting.” says Liam, a fifth grade student. Then when all the classes were there, let’s just say the loud music didn’t help. At about 3:10, all the fifth grade started running around until 3:30! Then the parent supervisors took the kids home at the end if they were there.

Ski Trip

   Ski Trip Extravaganza
   By Christian and Evan

On January 12, 2017 the 5th grade students of Captain and Glenridge went on a skiing field trip to Hidden Valley for the school day. They had to come at 8:00 and they left at about 8:15. The bus ride lasted almost 45 minutes and when they got there, they waited for instructions. After they left the building, they went to a large storage room to get their ski boots. The first people to get their ski boots on were lucky because they got to go out earlier. Then, there were stations you had to go through to be able to ski freely. Some of the stations (there were 7) were walking with skis, skiing down slopes and skiing through obstacles (cones). “It was really fun even though it was a lot of peoples first time” says Liam, a Glenridge student. When the were done with the 7th station, they went into free skiing. Some people did the Black Diamond: is a huge slope and you need a purple ticket to go on it. “It’s scary!” says Christian. There is a few ski lifts so once you go down a hill, you can ride it back up to the top of the slope. For many first-timers, they fell down a lot but they got back on their feet.

School Research

                 School Research

Kida in 5B at Glenridge Elementary School on November 11th 2016 started studying a certain topic for reading and writing. They are researching topics anywhere from Dreams to Ticks. They made a post-it booklet that reminds them of what to do and they wrote a flash draft on their topics before the research. The class went to the library to check out books on their topics and then started reading the books.
Over the weekend, they were supposed to research more on their topics and create a document to put links on. On 11/21/16, they went back to their flash draft and revised them with their new information and they cut out some of their lines then glued them to another piece of paper so they could write more on that topic then stapled those papers together to make a booklet. “I think it’s fun but it’s a lot of work” says classmate, Evan.
“It’s very interesting and fun even though it can sometimes be hard,” says classmate, Madeline.

Whenever they find new information they write it in their booklet to remember. The kids are separated into 5 groups and will talk to their group members if they have trouble. In the end they will write a report on their topic. Will they write a good report?

            By Evan

Book Groups in 5B in October are finishing their 1st book group book and starting their second book. What will their next book group book be ? Evan’s book group book was going to be “Fire girl” but they didn’t have enough copies so their teacher Mrs. Barnes gives them choices “Here are your choices!”
“What book do you guys want to read?” asks Evan.
“How about this one?”
“Sure!”
The group members continue to discuss. “I actually want this one. ‘Stargirl’” says book group member Sage.
“I really liked how me and my friends can discuss parts of the book that are good or bad.” Says Evan.

After this book, the book groups will stop doing book groups. Books includ “Loser” “Eleven” and a variety of books by Jerry Spinelli. All the 5th grade classrooms are doing this at glenridge elementary school. What will their next unit be?

Crash one word

Crash one word
By Evan

I think the one word is power. I think this because he is always bullying people because he wants more power. When Jane stood up for herself, Crash was surprised because she had the power. He bullied Penn because he knew Penn couldn’t stand up for himself, so he knew he could have more power over him.
