Archery by Sara

On April 21st, 2017 5th graders at Glenridge Elementary School started a new unit in P.E. - Archery. The P.E. unit Archery is only available for kids 3 - 5 grade. P.E. teachers taught this unit to give kids of the appropriate age an opportunity to try an exotic sport with the teacher’s trust that they will have self control. There are three steps to make sure nobody gets injured in this unit.

Step one - Step to the line: for this step, kids will step to the edge of the mat, and turn a certain direction based on if they were right handed or left handed. Kids who were right handed would put their left foot to the edge of the mat so they would be facing towards the 4th grade rooms. Kids who were left handed would put their right foot to the edge of the mat so they would be facing towards the stage. There were two different types of bows - one for the kids who were left handed and one for the kids who were right handed. After you were in place, you would pick up your bow. Kids who were right handed had a yellow bow to pick up. They would pick up the bow with their left hand and hang it by their side. Kids who were left handed had a red bow to pick up. They would pick up the bow with their right hand and hang it by their side.

Step two - Knock your arrow: After everybody has completed step one, they would wait for the teacher to call step two - Knock your arrow. Once the teacher called step two kids would take an arrow from the cone (there is a hole at the top for the arrows to go in) and turn their bow sideways so the place to hold the arrow will be pointing towards the sky. The arrow feathers are colored two different colors. Two of the arrow feathers will be colored one color and the other arrow feather would be colored a different color. The arrow feather that is different from the other arrow feathers will be facing towards the sky when you knock your arrow. Once you make sure your arrow is facing the right way, you snap it in. There are cushions to put your hands when pulling back. Between those cushions is a small spot where the arrow clicks in. Make sure you hear the click before moving on to step 3.
Step 3 - Pull, Aim, and Release: Once the teacher sees that everybody has completed step 2, he will give permission to student's to do step 3 - pull, aim, and release. When doing this step, you want to line up your feet so you are parallel to the target. After this, you want to pull back. People who are right handed will pull back with their right hand, and people who are left handed will pull back with their left hand. After you pull back, you have to aim. When aiming, people who are right handed will close their left eye and people who are left handed will close their right eye. This gets you a better chance at getting a bullseye. When you close your eye, you can see the point of the arrow. Put the point of the arrow right on the bullseye. Once you are ready to let go, you just release your hand that is pulling back, and watch the arrow fly through the air. You can take us much time as you need, and people who are waiting their turn have to be quiet so you can concentrate.

One thing is for sure, most people in 5th grade will miss the wonderful P.E. unit Archery. If you enjoyed archery a lot in this 5th grade year and you are going to Summerquest, ask your parent/guardian if you can take archery as one of your electives. Archery sure is one thing that kids who leave Glenridge will never forget.

Ski Trip by Breyanna

                                        Ski Trip

The ski trip was very fun. The first thing we did is put on our ski shoes. After that we went out and we went to the lady to tell us what to do if we had a problem. So after we listen to the lady tell us what to do. A man went and guided us up the hill. When we were up the hill. He told us to go over to station 4. So we all went to station 4 and they were teaching us how to go down slopes and hills. When we got there if we did not get down the hill without falling. Then we had to go all the way to the top and do it again. For some people it took them three times.

So after you done with station 4 you go to station 5 and it is the same as station 4 but just a higher hill and you have to go through cones. Also the hill is higher so it is harder to go through the cones because you are going faster. And to go up to the top of the hill you have to go up on the elevator thing so you can go to the top. So you could just go down the hill or go through the cones. But the cones will get you to the other station just going down the is for fun. So most people past that level. So if you past that level than you go to station 6 and station six is the last level. And station 6 is basicly the same thing as 5. It,s just that station 6 hill is a little steeper.

Station 6 is the last station and this station is hard because how steep the hill is and you have to go through cones and sense it was hard to ski through cones in the first place it is hard now. And the snow was fake so is was going to be faster and harder to control. So after you were done skiing on station 6 then you can go and ski
wherever you want to go skiing but if you are yellow you can go on one hill if you are purple then you can go on two hills.

Jump Rope for Heart

In Glenridge Elementary School, students in p.e are doing an activity called Jump Rope For Heart where they jump rope for people who have heart problems and raise money for them.   Liam F said “I thought it was a fun way to exercise for people who have heart problems.”  This activity went on for two weeks in February and ended up being Basketball for heart.  A lot of parents said their kids could have about 5 dollars for every shot they make in 2 minutes and if you donated you would be able to get a plastic toy with a lanyard.

Feb Blog: Hoops for Heart

Hoops For Heart

At glenridge school in 2017 , febuary 23 and 24 many kids got a chance to participate in hoops for heart.

Evelyn says “ it was amazing even though i did not get much shots i loved it”That shows she did like hoops for heart. Usually kids enjoy it because the more money they raise for hoops for heart the more prizes they get.

Hoops for heart is a program to raise money. PE gives you a chance to do that. They make it fun by doing basketball to make you energetic and you have to shoot as many hoops as you can in 2 minutes.

Many kids have enjoyed this program and this is way to help many others with the money people raise. Hopefully in the future they will accomplish this goal.

Hoops For Heart By Riley

     Hoops For Heart
Hoops for heart is very  similar  to jump Rope for heart. What happens is kids come Into P.E. and get into groups. The two kids are rebounding why the other person is shooting! Hoops for heart is a great and fun way to raise money!
A Lot of people like Hoops for heart because it had to do with basketball. Ava said “ I liked that it because I love  basketball”. The money Glenridge raised goes to heart research.  The way we raise money you get a form sent home and you have your parents  fill it out. On the form there is a part that says how much money will you give for each  basket your child makes. So really it depends on how many baskets you make.

Hidden Valley Ski Trip by Sara

Glenridge Ski Trip
On January 12th, 2017 5th graders at Glenridge Elementary School got on a bus at 8:15 A.M. to go to Hidden Valley to go skiing. Some people went skiing for the first time in their lives and others went skiing to improve their skills.

When the 5th graders entered Hidden Valley, all of them were amazed. One 5th grader named Sara was amazed by how they could fit so much fake snow in a huge area. After the 5th graders got their skis, they were able to go out and head towards station one. Most 5th graders were wearing a long sleeve shirt and a winter jacket plus warm pants and snow pants. A 5th grader Ava says, “The ski boots were easy to put on and they were very comfortable because I have been skiing before.” One 5th grader says the ski boots feel like high heels with your toes squished up in the boot. After students go through station one, they go to the next station which shows you how to put on your skis. The 5th graders would put their foot parallel to the skis, move their body weight to their foot, wait for the  click, and one ski would be on. Skiers would do the same process for the next ski, and then they would be ready to go to station three.
Station three was learning about how to go up a hill without falling down. Skiers would point their skis sideways and slowly start inching up a small hill. Once they made it up the hill they would go on to station four.
Station four was about learning how to go down hill. Skiers would wait in a line with their skis still sideways. Once they made it to the top, they slowly skied down the hill they just climbed. They learned how to do the pizza wedge, where the skier points their skis towards each other making what looked like a pizza slice. This skill would slow them down if they went down the hill too fast. If skiers did not know how to do the pizza wedge, they would fall when going down hill. After skiers learned how to go down hill, they would go on to station five.
Station five taught you how to go up the magic carpet. Skiers would put their skis where the shoveled snow was, shuffle forward a bit, then the magic carpet would take them on a ride up the hill. Skiers would have to lean forward on the magic carpet so if the carpet stopped at any time because someone might have fell, the skiers will not fall over. When the skiers made it to the top, there was a small hill they would go down to make sure the person behind them does not crash into them. Then they would go on to the next station, station six.
At station six, skiers would practice going down a slightly steeper hill than station four. They would practice using the pizza wedge to slow down, and also learn how to turn. After skiers practiced the pizza wedge a couple of times, they would ski to the right side of the hill where skiers would practice turning. Orange cones were set up in a straight line down the hill. Skiers would wait in a line until it was their turn to practice. If they got around all the cones at a normal speed, one of the instructors would tell them to go to station seven.
Station seven was the last station before skiers graduated ski school. To make sure you were ready to free ski and go down steeper hills, station seven was a test to make sure you knew how to do all the skills. Skiers would ski down a steep hill with cones set up. Skiers would ski down the hill a bit more faster than station six and have to go around all the cones. Once skiers mastered station seven, they would get a mark on their ski lift ticket saying they have graduated from ski school. After ski school, skiers would be allowed to ski on steeper hills, go on the rope tow, and the ski lift.
In between skiing, there was lunch. Skiers would take off their skis and put them on a ski rack. A special number was put on their ski lift ticket that matched their skis so after lunch skiers would not get mixed up about which skis were theirs. After skiers put their skis on the rack, they would go inside to get lunch. Lunch was a slice of pizza and a cup of water or sprite.

After skiing was over, most 5th graders got back on the bus to leave to go back to Glenridge. The other group of people stayed with their parents and skied some more. A lot of people had a fabulous time at Hidden Valley. For the beginner skiers, it was a rough time. In the end though, everyone liked skiing and most would want to come back for another great time.

Fifth Grade Trip

5th Grade Ski Trip
By Claire and Macy
It was January 12, 2017. The bus drove into the Hidden Ski Valley parking lot. 5th grade classes from Glenridge Elementary School and Captain Elementary School were going skiing. The schools were going because of their annual P.E. field trip that they went on every year. Some of the kids were very nervous while others were as excited as they ever had been.

First, they got their skis and boots. Then, they went outside for ski school. When they were done with ski school they got to ski wherever they wanted to. Some went to the chairlift while others went to the rope tow. Some even went to the Black Diamond! After a little while they got called in to lunch. They got their lunch and sat down with friends to talk about skiing and other things. Once lunch was over everyone went back outside to ski. Ski school closed so everyone was free to do what they wanted. Some people went in pairs, some people went in groups and some people went by themselves. “ It was really fun!” says Madeline. At the end of the day when everyone was getting back on the bus they were all exhausted. But that did not stop them from talking… talking and singing the whole way home.

Ski Trip by Rhadi

                             Hidden Valley Ski Trip

The ski trip was a interesting experience for Rhadi. They were at hidden valley on 1/12/17 with clayton his Glenridge and other clayton school Captain.and he just flat out sucked, like trash, garbage, bad, horrible. So they came in the building to get our ski’s and helmets.the line was long to get the ski’s.Because they got boots before and they need to get the right size ski for the right boot. And he got bored in line,so he had a bored face.and the guy said why are you looking like that.so he told him why and he said you will change tho happy when you get out there and he said yeah.he was totally wrong.so when he went out he got my ski’s on he was cool.but then it started.he could not even get to the next station because he was falling, and sliding back every time.they had to help me to the 2nd and 3rd station.but he was cool through the 4th station.but on the 5th he all most fell in the woods.then it was lunch.but then he could freestyle and that was bad.he had to have wiped out about 15 times.but every time Breyana helped me out by seeing if he was ok and then laughing with me.but 1 time he wiped out so hard he flipped, lost my ski’s,and got wet in a puddle of water.so this was a bad experience but hopefully its better next time.

Ski Trip By Sage

Ski Trip

Fifth grade was in the lunchroom at hidden valley.  It was the 12th of January in the morning and the fifth graders were ready to go skiing.  The fifth graders were going because they wanted to have fun and they didn’t really have a choice because it was a school field trip.

After everyone got their lift tickets on their coats they walked to the ski, snowboard and boot room.  It smelled REALLY bad.  It smelled like if you were to wear the same shoes for a year and than smell the inside of the shoe.  Everyone got their boots and went to stand in line for their skis.

To be able to free ski you had to get through 7 stations.  Some people got through fast others not so much.  Many people such as Sophie Sage and Cha Cha think that it was unnecessary for the people that have already gone skiing to have to go through the stations.

Tons of people loved the Ski trip.  “I had so much fun!”  Says Madeline.  Skiing is so much fun.” Says Sophie.  “I found it very fun and exciting and it was a little weird skiing because I have never gone skiing but I found it fun learning how to ski.”  Says Sara  “I really liked it because I got to spend a lot of time with my friends and I really liked it.” says Cha Cha.  “It was a very interesting adventure.”  Says Christian.  So many people liked it and want to ski again.

   Ski Trip Extravaganza
   By Christian and Evan

On January 12, 2017 the 5th grade students of Captain and Glenridge went on a skiing field trip to Hidden Valley for the school day. They had to come at 8:00 and they left at about 8:15. The bus ride lasted almost 45 minutes and when they got there, they waited for instructions. After they left the building, they went to a large storage room to get their ski boots. The first people to get their ski boots on were lucky because they got to go out earlier. Then, there were stations you had to go through to be able to ski freely. Some of the stations (there were 7) were walking with skis, skiing down slopes and skiing through obstacles (cones). “It was really fun even though it was a lot of peoples first time” says Liam, a Glenridge student. When the were done with the 7th station, they went into free skiing. Some people did the Black Diamond: is a huge slope and you need a purple ticket to go on it. “It’s scary!” says Christian. There is a few ski lifts so once you go down a hill, you can ride it back up to the top of the slope. For many first-timers, they fell down a lot but they got back on their feet.

Ski Trip by Stella

Ski Trip

On January 12 2017 all 5th graders from Clayton went on a ski trip for 1 day at hidden valley.

Many people thought skiing was fantastic but some did not sara said Yes , because it was an interesting experience and it was fun! But Rhadi had a totally different point of view No, because it wasn’t fun,it was hard and i kept falling down.

Skiing you use skis and you have poles, but when you start if you don't use poles. You had to go through 7 stations like learning how to walk up a hill with skis on or learning how to ski.

juggling:by breyanna

            Juggling

In October, in PE class, the fifth grade students at Glenridge were learning juggling.   So first they did warm ups and then they watched a video.  The video was showing the students how to juggle with scarves.  Once they had seen that, they got three scarfs to practice.   The reason they used scarfs is because they are lighter than a ball.  So there were two ways to do it.  The first way to do it is to throw two scarves in the air and then the other one.  Or the hard way to do it is to throw the scarves to the sides.  Then the next day they did cubes and it was a little hard for some people and easy for others.  The day they started the juggling with the cubes,  Mr. Hutson,  the PE teacher, showed the students how to do it.  They did not have an enough cubes to juggle so the students just used yarn balls.  They were harder to do than the cubes but it looked fun.  The next day they watched a video and they did all of it together, scarves and cubes at once,  and it was fun.

October Article - Juggling

             Circus Jugglers

Ian go with Macy Mr.Hutson announced,Macy really did not what to do this but she had to. This is why she did not like the 1 week of October.Miss.Miller said rows one and three go get scarfs and rows two and four go get cubes. Macy had to wait a while because the they ran out.Mrs.Miller turned on the music and Macy stared juggling the scarfs. She did the scarfs for a whole two minutes.Ian and Macy switched she was really bad at juggling the cubes.Mrs.Miller told the 5B to do partner juggling.Ian picked up the cubes and stared juggling. All of a sudden he throw a cube to Macy while he was still juggling the other two. Then Macy throw one back to him and he throw a mother one to her. They kept the same pattern for a long time.Macy tropes it a few times but they did a good job.It was like Macy and Ian were circus clowns.Ian clarified that Macy was good at juggling and he had a lot of fun.Macy said she had a awesome day!!!

Juggling -Ian

JUGGLING

An amazing unit had happened at Glenridge Elementary School in early October where students got to learn how to juggle.  They  started with scarves and now they juggle with cubes.  Liam Ferguson said “Juggling is fun and it grows your mindset!”  Ceci said “They grade you on talent which isn't fair because some kids don’t have a good talent in juggling.”

Other kids who didn’t get it as well probably didn’t like it or just not as much.  This unit has been going on for a week in October and the teachers showed videos and also showed how to juggle themselves.  You need a lot of hand eye coordination ability to be able to do this.  A lot of kids had trouble doing it. There was definitely a lot of frustration.  Evan said “Scarves are the hardest because they all wad up and get in your face.”  The whole school did this and only the 5th graders got to use cubes.  This will happen next year as well.  But 5th graders are leaving so they won’t be doing it.
