Breakout EDU

Breakout EDU
Claire
“YES!” one group shouted from inside a classroom in Glenridge Elementary School. They had gotten the box open. The other groups started scrambling for 2nd place. Mrs. Barnes’s 5th grade class were trying to break into a small wooden box “save America”. It was a revolutionary war themed breakout. But it was April 2017 But they were actually trying to break in.
There were a series of locks that they had to break, using their revolutionary war knowledge. They had 50 minutes to break into the box before the “evil madman came back with the final piece to his time machine and would go back in time and make Great Britain win the war. 5B may have been running a little late, but they still saved America.
Next time, when Mrs. McQueen’s class does it they will hopefully be able to save America too with their knowledge of the American Revolution.

Good Luck!!!

100 wc #3

I woke up.  “You're awake!” a raspy voice said.
“Where am I?.” I asked.

“Oh you're just in my hospital.” said the raspy voice again. It came from a plump woman in the middle of the room. She was hunched over a large kettle. She walked over and pulled a hair from my head. She popped it into the kettle. A video of my brother and mother came up. They were walking in and out of a wall. “What are they doing? I asked. “They are cursed to do that for eternity because of their crimes.” They lady said.

100 Word Challenge

100 Word Challenge

I am a photographer. I have taken lots of beautiful photos. I love them all. But, my favorite one is of some redwood trees. That was the very first picture I took with my camera. The trees were a wonderful shade of brown. They had great power and beauty to them. You could see the texture and imagine yourself there going up to the tree and touching it and feeling the hard bark. But at the same time I was a little bit worried that my boss would not like it. He’s very picky, hopefully he’ll like it.          He did!

Stranded Squad

Stranded Squad
7 5th grade students in  Mrs.Barnes class were waiting for the bus to come back and pick them up on March 9. The 7 students were left behind when there was not enough space on the bus for all of 5th grade. They had been planning to fit all of 5th grade on the bus, but they had a handicapped bus which meant that the bus had 2 less seats than planned.
“It was very fun!” Says Cha Cha, she was a part of the Stranded Squad.
Madeline, also part of the Stranded Squad says “It is the best thing that ever happened to me!”
But, the fun only lasts for so long. Soon the bus came back to pick them up.

The middle schoolers did a very good job in their play.

New Student

Mrs.Barnes 5th grade class was talking excitedly as they waited for their new classmate to walk out of the school building. It was a chilly winter morning and everyone was bundled up. Then the moment came the door opened and Riley Kerley saw her new classmates for the first time. “I was nervous but I was really excited!” says Riley. She had came on a very special the 5th graders were going on a field trip to the Saint Louis Symphony. They learned about Beethoven then they went back to school. Over the course of the week Riley met all of the teachers and learned all of her new classmates names and was caught up on all of the classes. Today she is doing well and has caught up with the rest of the class. 5B is looking forward to their next new classmate and will give them the same warming welcome.

Fifth Grade Trip

5th Grade Ski Trip
By Claire and Macy
It was January 12, 2017. The bus drove into the Hidden Ski Valley parking lot. 5th grade classes from Glenridge Elementary School and Captain Elementary School were going skiing. The schools were going because of their annual P.E. field trip that they went on every year. Some of the kids were very nervous while others were as excited as they ever had been.

First, they got their skis and boots. Then, they went outside for ski school. When they were done with ski school they got to ski wherever they wanted to. Some went to the chairlift while others went to the rope tow. Some even went to the Black Diamond! After a little while they got called in to lunch. They got their lunch and sat down with friends to talk about skiing and other things. Once lunch was over everyone went back outside to ski. Ski school closed so everyone was free to do what they wanted. Some people went in pairs, some people went in groups and some people went by themselves. “ It was really fun!” says Madeline. At the end of the day when everyone was getting back on the bus they were all exhausted. But that did not stop them from talking… talking and singing the whole way home.

November blog: Pizza Party

Pizza Party
By Claire
A  wonderful smell drifted out of Mrs. Barnes 5th grade class. They had gotten a Pizza Party in Nov. because they got an TEAMWORK award. A TEAMWORK award is an award in which every time they get a compliment they put another letter until they spell TEAMWORK. Then they get a prize.  In this case they chose an pizza party.
“It was okay.” says Siqi.
“I thought it was a lot of fun!” Liam.F says
It’s okay that some people don’t like it and some people do.  They also watched a movie. There were cupcakes, oreos, and of course, pizza! They will start to work for their next TEAMWORK award.  If you want to learn more about 5B’s party check out Cha Cha’s article!

Boo Shoes! By Claire

Boo Shoes!

By Claire

Students at Glenridge Elementary got a special treat on October 24, 2016. They got to take their shoes off in class (Socks in Class)
and wear only socks! This special event was a result of the 5th grade Socktober crew, Socktober is the month of October in which people donate socks to the homeless, they could also donate money or other important essentials. “ It was very comfy ” says Madeline. “It was  kind of unfair because you had to pay a dollar to take your shoes off and some people did not have a dollar.” But the important part is that they raised over $450 for Socktober.  Let’s spread the love, it could just be a pair of new socks or $100. Whatever you give, it’s welcome.

Will the Pringle Survive?
By Claire
On September 8, 2016 pringle challenge groups said goodbye to their beloved pringles and sent them on their journey to a school in Webster Groves. The pringle challenge is a challenge in which students are put in small groups of 3-4 students and are told that they have to mail a pringle to a school in Webster Groves. They can not use a packing box from Ups or Fedex, they can not use bubble wrap . One team made out of 2 girls: Claire and Stella, and 3 boys: Elliot, Rhadi and Adam. They used Nike shoe box as their box. They wrapped their pringle in tin foil then they put it in a plastic bag filled with tissues. They put that in a bigger bag filled with more tissues.  Then they put that in a bigger bag filled with more tissues. They put that in the shoe box. Then they tested it. After testing it with Claire dropping it off the loft and Adam spiking  it down they opened it up. It only had a tiny crack in it. This was a huge success  for Team Tissue- that is what they call themselfs.- Adam brought in some cotton and they put cotton in it the bags and in the box. This is what the team thinks will happen to their pringle.
“I think so because we over packed it and over tested it.” said Adam.
This is what Stella thinks, “No, because we over packed it and we did not use sophisticated items.”
Rahdi thinks,” Yes, because we used tissues.”
Elliot:”Yes, because I have faith in our team.”
However they are allowed to have different opinions. Let’s hope that Team Tissue’s pringle survived it’s hardest journey yet!! (And it’s only journey.)
