juggling:by breyanna

            Juggling

In October, in PE class, the fifth grade students at Glenridge were learning juggling.   So first they did warm ups and then they watched a video.  The video was showing the students how to juggle with scarves.  Once they had seen that, they got three scarfs to practice.   The reason they used scarfs is because they are lighter than a ball.  So there were two ways to do it.  The first way to do it is to throw two scarves in the air and then the other one.  Or the hard way to do it is to throw the scarves to the sides.  Then the next day they did cubes and it was a little hard for some people and easy for others.  The day they started the juggling with the cubes,  Mr. Hutson,  the PE teacher, showed the students how to do it.  They did not have an enough cubes to juggle so the students just used yarn balls.  They were harder to do than the cubes but it looked fun.  The next day they watched a video and they did all of it together, scarves and cubes at once,  and it was fun.

News Story: Carving

christian -  Blog Article - Carving
Yes I can carve now. “Two minutes later” I am done carving, so I can go printmaking. I think I will do orange and yellow…or pink! There are so many colors to choose. What can I do! I will do orange and yellow to make yellow-orange. I think that would look cool. I go up to the orange and there is a tool to get the paint. The tool is black in a cylinder shape and there is a metal thing holding it up. I then roll the tool into the paint three times, and then I roll it into my rubber carving three times. And then I walk to the paper and I put the carving face first onto the paper, and I turn the paper over and I make sure all the paint is on it, but not all of it. I push the corners and I put pressure on it. And then I carefully take the piece of paper off and I look at it and it looks good to me on my first try. So then I redo the whole thing so that I have one whole piece of paper that has a neat pattern!

Personal Narrative: Father's Day by Liam

Father’s Day by Liam

"On Father's Day my sister Ella and I got into a fight when she thought I ruined her oversized chalkboard when really it was water damage. But how would I know that when I'm four! I took too long to come up with a excuse so I said it was a ghost.

She did not believe me so I chased after her and somehow we ended up in the basement. I chased her around the couch and she dove onto the couch and put a pillow over her face. I tried yanking it but it didn't budge so I tried punching it, I heard a crunch noise and suddenly she let go of the pillow, and that's what did it, it knocked her tooth out. She got up and ran to my dad who was working outside.

I knew I was in trouble.

The world stopped when I looked out the kitchen window and saw my sister showing my dad. I hid in my room looking out the window until I heard a door open, I looked to my left, there he was standing in my room doorway starting up the world again.

He had a talk with me, he said if I ever did something like that again I would get in bigger trouble. So technically I didn't get in trouble but I was still sobbing when he said it was a baby tooth.

From that day on even till this day I'd like to go back and show my sister what it looks like so I could show my family what it looked like to get her in trouble for not giving a four year old some slack. And she knew I get mad easily so she was not aloud to make me mad, I'd like to see her get in trouble for once."

pendulums by finley

In the month of October, the 5B science class studied pendulums at the Glenridge elementary school. They studied pendulums so they could understand different forces. They got an assignment to experiment with pendulums.

   What is a pendulum?

A pendulum is something hanging and swinging freely from a fixed point. A grandfather clock might use for timekeeping a pendulum that swings back and forth.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/24/Oscillating_pendulum.gif

Above is a pendulum. Weight swings back and forth around the vertical axis. The vertical axis is the blue dotted line in the picture above.

There are three forces at work on a pendulum: Gravity, Friction and Opposite Force. Gravity is a force that pulls things down closer to the center of the Earth.  In the picture above gravity is pulling the grey ball down to the ground.  Friction is a force that allows the object to swing freely from the fixed point.  The weaker the friction is, the more freely the ball will swing.

Opposite force is a force that pushes against gravity.  When the ball swings up, the opposite force is pushing against gravity.

My Conference

The first conference in Rhadi’s new school. he wasn’t that nervous at first. They were talking then the teacher (Ms.Barnes) showed them something he did silly, and his parents laughed. he know’s it was with why. he does not know why, but he felt embarrassed.
So he and his mom got out the car and there were grey clouds, raining, and it getting darker by the minute.  So he guessed it was bound for somebody to feel weird?  So when they were going in the school he cracked a couple jokes.  But when they came in the class it was strictly seriousness.  So they talked about the grades and how he was doing socially.
But then she brought up something he did silly on work.  So of course his parents laughed.  And for some reason, he felt kind of embarrassed. He did’nt tell his parents, but they know now.  But he had to get with it, so he laughed to.  And then they talked about the rest, and then when they walked out.  Then his dad said, ”I’m so proud of you, for adjusting to a new school so quick” and he said ”thank you.”  And his mom said ”and thank you for being so quick to agree to have to change schools.” he said ”your welcome” and they walked out of  his first conference in his new school.

SCHOOL PHOTOS RETURNED

              By stella

At Glenridge school students got back their photos from picture day. Some people's looked good, some looked fine some looked not so good.

Most students said their photos looked bad. At that time when everybody got their photos back there were a lot of commotion in that room. Madeline said “ Looked like I was photo shopped” she also said “No, my picture is not good” . katie has a different side of the story “Yes, I think my photo looked great, my dress matched the background”.  “It was ok”. Claims Christian.

On October 27 2016 is retake day at Glenridge school.  That is when you retake your picture if you and your family think it is not the best. When everybody got their photos back immediately everyone started talking about their picture most of the people in that classroom did start talking when they got their photos back.In 2017 the same thing probaly will be the same, everyone talking about their photos.

This is one of the many things students talk about at Glenridge school.

                                     Art   class
                                                                     By Eliot

It was a B day - basically how the school organizes our specials.  B day is an art day.   So after math and discovery the  class (5B) went downstairs to the bottom floor and lined up at the art room door.  Mrs. Oliver, the art teacher, greeted us as we came into the art room.  She always says, “Good morning!” or “How are you doing?” or “Hi.”

The class sat down at their tables and then when Mrs. Oliver walked into the room she told us what we were going to do for the lesson, and the lesson was creating linoleum designs and then printing the linoleum  design with ink on a piece of paper.    Mrs. Oliver showed us how to create a design and transfer the design from the paper to the linoleum.  So once the class finished their designs they gathered around the table and watched Mrs. Oliver carve out her linoleum design and teach  the class how to do that. So then the class went back to their tables and took the tool Mrs. Oliver used to carve out her linoleum piece.

So Mrs. Oliver told the class not to carve towards us and keep our non-carving hand behind the carving hand so that we would not hurt ourselves, since the carving tool was really sharp.  So the class started carving and some children were still making their design for their linoleum piece.

So the class carved  and carved and carved until Mrs. Oliver  said it was time to clean up so the class finished what they were on and  put their materials away  and put their linoleum pieces in the center of the table that the children sat at.  Mrs. Oliver dismissed each table to go outside to the playground for recess.

Evan said that it was really fun carving, Ian said that it was fun because it was satisfying, Cha Cha said that it was really fun because she got to use a sharp tool, and Adam said that it was the best art class ever!

Unity Day-Ava

Unity Day
October 25, 2016 it is a B-Day. It was the day day Ava, Cha Cha, Christian and Siqi film our video for Unity Day at Glenridge school.

Ceci says  “ I think it did not go well only fifth graders weared orange”
Ava says “ I disagree. Some people did a video, speeches, announcements, ex. And they completed it.”.

Unity Day is a Day where people wear Orange because there are bullies out there. People celebrate it and hope people will stop bullying. The people in the fifth grade classes at glenridge elementary school are making an effort to stop bullying by making posters, doing speeches, making videos and so much more. The fifth graders at Glenridge elementary school hope to make a difference.

Boo Shoes! By Claire

Boo Shoes!

By Claire

Students at Glenridge Elementary got a special treat on October 24, 2016. They got to take their shoes off in class (Socks in Class)
and wear only socks! This special event was a result of the 5th grade Socktober crew, Socktober is the month of October in which people donate socks to the homeless, they could also donate money or other important essentials. “ It was very comfy ” says Madeline. “It was  kind of unfair because you had to pay a dollar to take your shoes off and some people did not have a dollar.” But the important part is that they raised over $450 for Socktober.  Let’s spread the love, it could just be a pair of new socks or $100. Whatever you give, it’s welcome.

Socks In Class

                                              Socks in class

It was October 24, 2016 at Glenridge Elementary School.
Today was Socktober! If you paid a dollar you would get to wear socks in class.

Everyone was rushing over to Mrs. Barnes saying “Here’s my dollar!” so loudly it seemed like they were screaming from all the way across the country. Luckily most people remembered to bring their dollar.
Then there were the people who forgot their dollar with sad looks on their faces. But it looked like everyone was having a good time. As the 5th graders went around in circle up I started wondering if they could they their socks to specials too.

Once they finished Mrs. Barnes said “You probably are going to need your shoes for specials” They all moaned and groaned but still stayed silent. Maybe next time they might wear pajamas for the next Socktober

5B’s first parent teacher conference

5B’s first parent teacher conference
By Siqi

It happened on October 17, 2016. The 5B students and parents are going to have a conference with their teacher at a scheduled time.

It all happened in 5B’s classroom. The students and parents came in at their scheduled time to meet with the teacher, Mrs Barnes. “I feel like I know more about my daughter” said Juanli Pan, Siqi Xu’s mother. Why this happened? Mrs Barnes wanted to meet with her student’s parents of course
Not all students decided to stay with their parents during conference, several students hung out in the library while waiting for their parents to finish. Parents that are too busy or simply don’t have time were understandably absent and did not attend the meeting.
Some students were also absent during conference, “ I haven’t been to the conference” said Liam Ferguson, a student of 5B. How will the next conference go? Stay tuned to find out.

Printing in Art for the First Time by. Adam

Printing in Art       by. Adam

Today at Glenridge elementary the class of 5B was printing for the first time in art with a linoleum square that 5B carved themselves. “Ok I am going to demonstrate how to do the actual printing on the paper without not aligning it correctly, or not putting to much or not enough ink on the roller and the stamp so it comes out correctly on the piece of paper” when Mrs. Oliver came and squeezed some of the ink out, the whole class all grossed out by the oil that came out before the actual color came out. Mrs. Oliver thought it was disruptive so she said: that if it grosses you out than you can go and sit out. She took her roller and rolled it in the ink and spread it out on the little foam plate and then rubbed it on her stamp and when she got the paper out she said that we will definitely get it wrong the first time but we are going to do it several more times and that we would get better at it.

When she finished demonstrating how to print it on paper she dismissed us to go and do our own printing. What I saw when all the people in the room started working all these incredible designs but they messed up on the first printing just like Mrs.Oliver had predicted. We all noticed how the pink was really dry and it wasn’t working that well, so everybody that was using pink ink switched to a different color and started working again by the time they had done at least three printings per artist. Art was already over but nobody wanted to stop so Mrs.Oliver had to pull some people away from their art work. And got them lined up for recess anxious for next art.

The 5th graders in 5B will continue to print with there hard work in the next following classes of art.
