Barnes Bucks
On May first Mrs. Barnes introduced her class to Barnes bucks. Barnes bucks a 5B tradition are a dollor bill with Mrs. Barnes face on it.
There are various ways to get Barnes bucks you can post blog comment are add to their padlet. Some people are way ahead because of Homework Passes every homework pass you didn't use is worth 20 Barnes Bucks. Ceci claims "I'm behind but, I'm hoping that I can earn some at the auction." The auction is a three day long period where Barnes student can bring in one item each day and auction it off. Many kids are all ready thinking about ideas. Sara said "I'm going to sell my fidigit spinner." Mrs.Barnes is planning on selling items that have more classroom value like the ruler she used to attack Ava.
Barnes Bucks have been interesting and everyone is exited for the auction on May 25th till then Barnes goers will have to wait. So stay cool out there. Happy summer!

Chemistry By Pepper
Chemistry
In the month of April, The class of 5B had a chemistry unit in science class. 5B would go to chemistry daily, When they arrived to the awesome science lab at their school, Class begins.
5B starts class off by greeting their science teacher. They would find out what experiment would occur that day, gather materials and begin instructions. What 5B mainly did was experimenting with solutions and mixtures. They would make a saturated solution, Separate the extra solid that didn’t dissolve and put a small amount of solution in an evaporation dish to evaporate the water and check the crystals the next day. “It was fun cause we did a lot of experiments.” Allison said.
5B will always remember how much fun it was doing chemistry being the only grade that does this unit. But the question still remains: Will they ever do chemistry again?

Breakout EDU
Breakout EDU
Claire
“YES!” one group shouted from inside a classroom in Glenridge Elementary School. They had gotten the box open. The other groups started scrambling for 2nd place. Mrs. Barnes’s 5th grade class were trying to break into a small wooden box “save America”. It was a revolutionary war themed breakout. But it was April 2017 But they were actually trying to break in.
There were a series of locks that they had to break, using their revolutionary war knowledge. They had 50 minutes to break into the box before the “evil madman came back with the final piece to his time machine and would go back in time and make Great Britain win the war. 5B may have been running a little late, but they still saved America.
Next time, when Mrs. McQueen’s class does it they will hopefully be able to save America too with their knowledge of the American Revolution.
Good Luck!!!

Map testing by Quinn
Map Testing
Through the school week of April 24-28 3rd 4th and 5th graders at Glenridge elementary school did the Measure of Academic Progress test (MAP)in the state of Missouri.Glenridge was not the only one to do it however.Schools across the state of Missouri took part of the test.Schools have different weeks so not all of the school in Missouri did it as the same week as Glenridge but still did it on a different week. There was Reading,Science,Math, and Literacy. The 5th grade took the test all week except Wednesday.3rd had two days and 4th had 3 or 2 days. After they were finished with the first test(there were 3 tests for Science and math and reading however Literacy had only one which was writing a paragraph)kids would eat their snack and get ready for the next. Some kids were tested with adults with MacBooks but the ones who did not go stayed with the teacher and used ChromeBooks. That is how map testing went at Glenridge Elementary School.
Eco Art by Ava
It’s April 20, 2017, at Glenridge Elementary school. 5th Graders instructed there claymo groups to make eco art for Earth day. Andy Goldsworthy inspired his art on nature. If claymo leaders choose Andy they would go outside and make art with natural materials around glenridge. If they Claymo leaders choose Louse, they would stay inside and make a sculpture with recycled materials.
Here are some quotes from 5th grade leaders. “I thought it was a fun way to make eco art with our claymo groups” Liam said. Here is a Claymo leader who had different thoughts. Cha Cha said “It was boring, the kinder gardeners were being bad”.
Overall it was a very creative way to bond with our claymo groups.
Great nursery rhyme disaster by Sophie
It was may 3rd, 2017. Sing me a story, the great nursery rhyme disaster. Little miss muffet was bored. So she decided to go be in other people’s rhymes and ends up ruining them. It was a great play. The actors were very precise and remembered all of their lines. They had to do their play 2 times- for the school and parents. They both loved it.
After the play was over, many 5th graders went to a place called Andy’s ice cream. Some people got banana splits, other chocolate concrets. They had a great time.
Stuffed animal day by Claudia
Glenridge Elementary students paid a dollar to bring a stuffed animal to school. Every student was allowed to bring a stuffed animal or blanket. The reason Glenridge students had a chance to bring there plushie to school in the first place was because Glenridge 5th graders hosted a fundraiser for Lift for Life academy.
Big or small stuffys everyone loved bringing there plushies too school, even better it was for a great cause.

Breakout EDU by Adam
Breakout EDU
At Glenridge Elementary in 5B and 5S got to do Breakout EDU. Breakout EDU is a puzzle that teachers can set up, with a series of locks and codes. It is the same idea as an escape the room but you have to break in.
Mrs. Barnes set up one of these to quiz the 5th graders at Glenridge about the revolutionary war. The first hint she gave the students was “The founding fathers will start the quest for all of you.” So all of the kids walked over to the founding fathers which was hung above the computers. The kids all found a key taped under one of the key boards. So then the kids went off finding the clues all around the room for their group to push ahead. All the groups found all of the clues, unlocked all the locks and decoded all the codes. Inside the box that they were supposed to break into was… LOLLYPOPS!!!
Mrs. Barnes has promised to do more of the breakouts in the future and the kids will continue to solve them.
Archery by Liam
At Glenridge elementary school 3-5 grade is doing archery in PE class. This unit is to show students how to operate a bow safely and aim right where your target is. Everyday they would come into PE go over the three steps. 1. “Step to the line.” 2. “Knock your arrow.” 3. “Pull, aim and shoot.” After going over the three steps they would be assigned a cone number and that’s where they would sit. When it was your turn you would step up to the line and when Mrs.Miller or Mr.Hutson said so you would follow the three steps. If you shot a bullseye you could add your name to the bullseye club. On the very last day there were balloons in the middle of the targets right were the bullseye was. If you shot the bullseye you could pop the balloon. It was a very fun unit.
Breakout EDU By Pepper
Breakout EDU
In April the class of 5B did Breakout EDU. The point of this was to test our revolutionary war skills to break into the box. Their classroom suddenly became a workspace for the teams. Their teacher was the one who let them do it.
The students were divided into five teams. The only way to break in was to solve the riddles and see if the answer would unlock one of the boxes or bags to help us get one step closer to unlocking the main box. “I thought it was a smart way for teachers to get students to do hands on learning and it was very fun and challenging” Ian said. This activity puzzled students but all group broke into the box.
The class of 5B will always remember how much fun breakout was. For once students enjoyed learning and testing their skills.

April Blog by Finley
On Friday April 28th the 5th grade went to the First Steamworks competition. It was held at the Americas Center in downtown St. Louis. We felt that it was a great end to
our week of map testing. The day was rainy but our bus was on time for our departure at 11;30. We got to cheer for the Clayton robohounds at their 1:00 match. It was exciting because they won their competion ending up in 6th place after that. After the match we were able to walk around in the pits looking at teams booths collecting pins and got to see some of the robots in action up close.
Archery by Sara
On April 21st, 2017 5th graders at Glenridge Elementary School started a new unit in P.E. - Archery. The P.E. unit Archery is only available for kids 3 - 5 grade. P.E. teachers taught this unit to give kids of the appropriate age an opportunity to try an exotic sport with the teacher’s trust that they will have self control. There are three steps to make sure nobody gets injured in this unit.
Step one - Step to the line: for this step, kids will step to the edge of the mat, and turn a certain direction based on if they were right handed or left handed. Kids who were right handed would put their left foot to the edge of the mat so they would be facing towards the 4th grade rooms. Kids who were left handed would put their right foot to the edge of the mat so they would be facing towards the stage. There were two different types of bows - one for the kids who were left handed and one for the kids who were right handed. After you were in place, you would pick up your bow. Kids who were right handed had a yellow bow to pick up. They would pick up the bow with their left hand and hang it by their side. Kids who were left handed had a red bow to pick up. They would pick up the bow with their right hand and hang it by their side.
Step two - Knock your arrow: After everybody has completed step one, they would wait for the teacher to call step two - Knock your arrow. Once the teacher called step two kids would take an arrow from the cone (there is a hole at the top for the arrows to go in) and turn their bow sideways so the place to hold the arrow will be pointing towards the sky. The arrow feathers are colored two different colors. Two of the arrow feathers will be colored one color and the other arrow feather would be colored a different color. The arrow feather that is different from the other arrow feathers will be facing towards the sky when you knock your arrow. Once you make sure your arrow is facing the right way, you snap it in. There are cushions to put your hands when pulling back. Between those cushions is a small spot where the arrow clicks in. Make sure you hear the click before moving on to step 3.
Step 3 - Pull, Aim, and Release: Once the teacher sees that everybody has completed step 2, he will give permission to student's to do step 3 - pull, aim, and release. When doing this step, you want to line up your feet so you are parallel to the target. After this, you want to pull back. People who are right handed will pull back with their right hand, and people who are left handed will pull back with their left hand. After you pull back, you have to aim. When aiming, people who are right handed will close their left eye and people who are left handed will close their right eye. This gets you a better chance at getting a bullseye. When you close your eye, you can see the point of the arrow. Put the point of the arrow right on the bullseye. Once you are ready to let go, you just release your hand that is pulling back, and watch the arrow fly through the air. You can take us much time as you need, and people who are waiting their turn have to be quiet so you can concentrate.
One thing is for sure, most people in 5th grade will miss the wonderful P.E. unit Archery. If you enjoyed archery a lot in this 5th grade year and you are going to Summerquest, ask your parent/guardian if you can take archery as one of your electives. Archery sure is one thing that kids who leave Glenridge will never forget.
Breakout EDU, Sage
Breakout EDU
On a fun day in April The class of 5B was going to face one of their biggest challenges yet. They were doing Breakout EDU. They were in their classroom getting ready to do a fun activity so they could learn about the revolutionary war.
Breakout EDU is an activity where you have to solve locks with clues you figure out. Some clues you found around the room, some you had to solve, one clue was evan in a random book.
So many people liked it such as when Evan said “A fun very difficult challenge.” It was kind of challenging to Sage Because Sage said “It was very challenging and difficult.” Some people think it helped our brains such as Liam F said “It’s a good way to challenge our brains”
Breakout EDU was a fun activity that the 5B love and would like to do again. They evan did the online one and are begging Mrs. Barnes to let them do it again.

Character banquet by Ian
At Glenridge Elementary School students got to dress up a character from their favorite fantasy book. For example Ian dressed up as a talking frog named froggy from the book called Land of Stories by Chris Colfer. He had a frog mask and a suit, representing the photo that the book showed him to look as. Other kids dressed up as gods or other talking animals of sorts or just a normal human from a fantasy book. Every kid had to bring a food item for their table of eight. Say for example Ian. He brought in gummy worms and leaf cookies because he’s a frog and that’s what frogs typically eat. Everyone there enjoyed and it was Glenridge’s first time ever doing a character banquet and they say it went great!
Eliot, Robotics Convention
The Robotics Convention
By Eliot
On one rainy but exciting morning, the Glenridge 5th grade got to a robotics convention. This was a once in a lifetime chance since this was the last time the convention was going to be in Saint Louis.
The 5th graders got on the bus and rode to the robotics convention at The America Center. When the 5th graders got there the kids in XL in the other grades were already there. Then the fifth graders divided into 16 groups of three or four students with one adult in each group. The adults handed out the lanyards to the 5th graders so they could get into the convention.
Once everyone entered the convention, all the groups went in different directions to look at different booths. Some groups went to see the robotics competitions. Clayton High School had a team called RoboHounds 4500. They had a booth in the pits where they showed the fifth graders how they built their robot. After the RoboHounds were done explaining, the groups had to leave to go back to school, Sara said" I was excited to see the RoboHounds", Adam said " It was fun and I got to learn a lot about robots", Liam W. said "It was nice to be in small groups", Ava Said " It was fun and I liked all the free stuff."

Will they have another day like this?
MAP Testing
MAP Testing
The fifth grade students of Glenridge Elementary tested in their classrooms for about 2 hours a day for 4 days on chromebooks in April. Most kids though it was hard and boring. “It was very boring. But the good thing was we didn’t get any homework for a week!” says student Cha Cha.
The teachers passed out candy before and during the test. “[It was] hard but in the end we got candy” says student Liam. There were about 10 tests total and they each had around 20 questions on them. When the other grades did the testing, 5the grade had to “camp out” in the other grades classrooms. Student Sage says:”[It] sucks but goes by fast.” A after the test the kids got to read independently for a while.
The Big Show!
The Big Show!
By: Madeline
On April 18th, 25th and 26th, fifth graders practiced for their big musical on May 3rd. The rehearsals had their share of ups and downs plus many dramatic and applause worthy moments.
The first rehearsal was the most disliked rehearsal. Mrs. Kelton had trouble directing due to the amount of talking and “chit chat” the fifth graders produced. In fact, they were stopped mid rehearsal many times due to the amount of talking. Due to this, the 5th graders finished rehearsal 5 minutes before dismissal (for specials) which meant it took 55 minutes to run through a show that is only supposed to take 30 minutes. Riley Kerley, a fifth grader is Mrs. Barnes Class, said “It was very chaotic but also very exciting”. The exciting feeling is something that many felt as well because this was the first time all of fifth grade was going to practice together plus the fifth grade musical is a big deal.
The second rehearsal did not have nearly as much talking. In fact, fifth grader Allison Zhang recalls the experience as following: “The 2nd was less crazy and it was good because I got an applause”. The applause part was probably one of the most memorable parts about the rehearsal. Allison portrays the part of the dish in “Hey Diddle Diddle”. When Little Miss Muffet (Sophie) ended up running away with the spoon, replacing her, she is not happy. She ends up screaming at the dish which in turn caused everyone to applaud because she did such a great job. The only thing that changed (other than the talking) in this rehearsal was the fact that the microphones were added. This helped everybody learn the amount of volume to put into the microphone for the actual show. The third rehearsal also went much like the second rehearsal except for the body mics. This time around, Grandmother (Abby) and Little Miss Muffet (Sophie) worked with the body mics. In the beginning, there was a lot of feedback and it took about 5 minutes to get everything fully adjusted. In the end, Mrs. Kelton noted the Grandmother (Abby) might just have to use a handheld mic so Little Miss Muffet’s (Sophie) mic would work. Also, the dance was kind of a mess. Little Miss Muffet #2 (Madeline), Hey Diddle Diddle characters, Sing a Song of Sixpence characters, Lords and Ladies of the Court, Queen (Sage), and the Knave (Liam W./Salt) ended up facing some difficulties. Dog (Lyric) was goofing off and the circle made it hard for everybody. The reason the circle made it hard was due to the fact that more people get sucked into the dance each time the song repeats and some people do not back up the circle so their is enough room. People are having to shout and send signals to get people to move, which can not happen in the performance.
As the clock ticks down to the performance and their last practice, everybody is getting ready. Costumes are being prepared and lines are being rehearsed. The excitement around showtime is something that is very unique. But even with excitement, there is anxiety. People are getting nervous and that is not the best feeling. Even with these feelings, you can tell that this show will be very interesting. Definitely something that is unforgettable. The question is: what will make this performance unforgettable and why?V.I.P. Riley
V.I.P.S
This year the teachers decided to end the year with a bang! So that means that every day all three 5th grade classroom will have a V.I.P! The way to be V.I.P is your balloon has to get popt. But for the first V.I.P we just picked a stick for who would pop the first balloon. Are first V.I.P was Macy! So what happens when your V.I.P is you get special treatment like you get to sit where ever you want and you get a poster where your class says what they like about you. Then you take a picture with your poster at the end of the day. I ask Madeline what she thought of the V.I.P.S and she said I was so excited to hear that we get to V.I.P.S! I have really enjoyed the V.I.P.S! I can't wait when I am V.I.P.!

Robotics Field Trip
The Robo-Hounds competed in the Robotics Competition on April 28. So Glenridge fifth grade piled into a bus and got to experience the Robotics Convencion in the America’s Center.
Many kid’s loved going downtown to see this event that has been going on for seven years. Clayton or Robo-Hounds team was picked as a wild card and won their game. It was fun for many students to see their hometown win in fact Madeline says “It was great to see Clayton competing and winning.” Once they won Madeline was one of the people who stood up and got to be on the big screen. Many people were glad that Clayton could win for the last time before the event got moved. Next year Glenridge will not be able to visit this event because next year it will be held in Houston. Even though many Barnes kids loved it “It was a nice experience to have.” Say Claudia. But, next year other kid’s will get that experience over 15,000 kids from Kindergarten through High School, from 33 different countries go there every year.
This big competition started in 1989 when Dean Kamen inventor of the Segway Human Transporter wanted to promote S.T.E.M. And it has there were many all girls robotics teams including the Robet's. Who Mrs. Barnes said "The Robet's were my favorite team!" And the Robet's did well in the game. The rules of the competition are simple they have six weeks to build a robot based on a game. This year’s game or challenge was the collect and shoot the balls. If you got a ball into the basket it was one point. And f your robot was able to collect the gears around the court that gave them extra points.
We hope to hear more about this competition next year as fifth grade will become middle schoolers. Happy summer stay cool out there!

April blog-Charactor Banquet- Allison
It was April 21, 2017. As people came into the classrooms they all looked very interesting with all of their costumes. Today was the character banquet. 5th graders dressed up as characters from fantasy books they recently read. They would come to school in their costumes, then after recess they would meet in the cafeteria to have their banquet. Each fifth grader would bring a treat to go with their character like if someone was being Harry Potter they might bring butter beer or chocolate frogs. Everyone was excited for the banquet later in the day.
Hours later…… The bell rang and the 5th graders lined up excited to go inside. When they walked in it looked like a party. With plates, silverware, and decorations. Mrs. Barnes said “Find the spot with your name on it and sit down. When they found their tables everyone looked around. The 5th graders had never had anything like this. There were brownies, cookies, drinks, and dinner foods. There was even one table that had pizza, bread, and chicken wings! When everyone got settled down the parents started asking questions about the characters. When the banquet ended everyone talked to each other about what characters they saw and the foods. Allison said “That was cool, hopefully we have another event like that.” Over all they had a great time and enjoyed it. Everyone left the building with a smile one their face and told their family about the exciting event that happened today.

The magic wall
By Eliot
One afternoon two friends were walking and the two friends names were Rick and James. Suddenly Rick asked James to run into the wall to see what would happen. But neither of them new that the wall was enchanted and who ever would run into the wall would get stuck and turn to stone. So James ran as fast as he could and when he reached the wall he did not smash into it, but ran through it, but as he was going through the wall he got stuck halfway and started turning to stone. Everyone walks past but looks.

The Strangest year ever
Mr. Johnson had been teaching for fifteen years and this was the most peculiar year he has had so far. Two of his students had disappeared without anyone knowing. Three kids said they had something to show me. They lead me into the bathroom were they said they could transporte me into a different realm. I didn’t believe them, any sane person with no evidence wouldn’t. I told them to explain more. All they said was walk through the wall. I did and I saw something so amazing but when I turned around all I saw were my two students stuck in the wall I had just passed through.

I wobbled from the punch, and fell into what seemed like a endless dream. I walked around and saw my house appear out of white mist. My mom opened the window and shouted, “ Come FAST!! We got a TRAIN TO CATCH!!” and with that, I hopped in the flying car, and we traveled across many lands, to the train station. I found platform 9, and RAN THROUGH IT!!! I reached platform 9 and ¾, and I saw a big train. I hopped on, and waved as I saw my parents go by...\

I woke up. “You're awake!” a raspy voice said.
“Where am I?.” I asked.
“Oh you're just in my hospital.” said the raspy voice again. It came from a plump woman in the middle of the room. She was hunched over a large kettle. She walked over and pulled a hair from my head. She popped it into the kettle. A video of my brother and mother came up. They were walking in and out of a wall. “What are they doing? I asked. “They are cursed to do that for eternity because of their crimes.” They lady said.

I was falling asleep and I had a dream about people walking through the wall. I was very surprised and freaked out that actual people were walking through walls wait someone's calling my name I opened my eyes and saw my parents I told them instantly what happened in my dream both my parents looked worriedly at each other and then they said come on let's go on a walk. I got up and said what's wrong and they walked in the wall and then I knew that my dream was not a dream.

This was going to be a new life. No turning back now. Let’s go! As we slowly walked through the wall a bright light shined on my face. Only one word could describe what I was seeing “~Magnificent”. All of a sudden when I touched my face I felt warm streams of tears running down my face and neck. “When we find Grandmother let’s go out to eat” Kai giggled. As we got into a bubble car and started to drive off I couldn't help but look outside of the bubble. All the circle buildings floating it just so unordinary.

After a long day Josh and Hermit were walking home near a construction site. They stoped to talk about what the building might look like. They looked up for a instant second to see the cement truck collide with the crane! The noise made a thunder blasting sound to hear. Suddenly they noticed they were standing in a mold for a wall that was being poured at the second.
Josh and Hermit both tried to step back from the wall but it was useless because it was ultra quick dyring cement. Josh asked “ How is your day going Hermit?”
“What?”

It was almost our turn in line we were waiting to go through the wall. Every year the wall opens at the kingdom museum. This was no ordinary wall. Besides the fact that you can go through it, inside the wall there is a magical unicorn that let’s you see the future. Each year it’s a different thing in the wall. Like last year it was a bunny that let you grant one wish. The lines get so crazy that they go all the way down the building. But we came a day early. “Next in line”!

She then abruptly stopped and started bawling on the ground. Her mother caught up to her. Instead of scolding her she just hugged her. “It will be okay”, whispered her mother. “Ok”, was all Beth could say before collapsing into her mother’s arms.

Off Finn and Philby went as DHI’s through the wall of Maleficent's lair to fight Chernabog once and for all to save Disney world from the overtakers. If Finn and Philby fail their mission, The Overtakers could kill everyone in florida, If not more. “We need a plan” Philby said. “Maybe we could do the same thing we did with Jez” Finn said. “You mean what you did with Jez, I still don't know how to cross over when i'm awake, But somehow you can.” Philby said. “If only the others weren't kidnapped by Chernabog.” Finn said. “We've lost”.

Jack heard a rustle in the bushes behind him. “What was that!?” he heard Martha ask from behind him. “I don’t know and I don’t want to find out!” and he broke into a run. He noticed Martha wasn’t behind him anymore. Stupid labyrinth. They had been stuck in the mysterious labyrinth for days now. He back-tracked only to find her running from a weird lion-snake animal. Not an animal. A monster. “Over here!” he yelled. A dead end. Then, out of a final desperation, he ran right through the wall and out into the real world...

One day I went to Egypt. When I went to Egypt I got to visit the Pyramids. When I went into the first pyramid there were a lot of mummies! Then I went into a second pyramid there was a lot of ancient art work which I thought was pretty cool. Then we went into a third pyramid and saw in the wall that someone tried to go thought. Then we had to watch a video how he got stuck inside the wall. When the video was over it was time to go I was sad we had to go. -Riley

We were in the cave. We were close I could feel it in my bones. I had been walking for days and my feet dragged as I walked. I was walking in the cave when I see something I can't tell what it is but I start running. As I get closer I realize it's a wall. All of this walking for a wall. I go to sit next to my sister and as I sit down my hand goes throught the wall. I realize the wall is fake so my sister and I slowly and gently walk through it.

After escaping the house he finds out that his parents aged 31 years but he only stayed at the house for 31 days. His parents have changed a lot.

“Come on!” yelled Marco “We’ve got to hurry!”. Percy gave a confused look to Marco and stopped walking. Marco turned around. “What's wrong?” he said. “Marco, you’re walking straight into a wall.” said Percy. “Who cares?” yelled Marco. He walked into the wall, but froze in the middle. “Keep going Macro if you want to prove it’s not dangerous!” yelled Percy. Marco didn’t budge. “Marco?” said Percy. He knew what was going on. “Oh come on Marco!” Percy said. “I’m stuck!” screamed Marco. Percy grabbed the nearest thing A hook. Then he went to get Marco out of the wall.
